DJ Patil Poster, 2019

Inkjet on paper, 24 x 36 inches

Initially, the note was one of several written on WH stationery by DJ Patil, the nation's first Chief Data Scientist, that were released from a meeting between himself, President Obama, and others during Obama's term in 2016. This March, Shirt began a dialogue with Mr. Patil, sharing an idea to sell an enlarged version of the note as a poster and give part of the proceeds to a charity. The scientist made clear that although the note belonged to the people and Shirt was free to do what he wanted, he had a request: In terms of charity, he would ask Shirt specifically to "do something that would've helped a younger him." On April 12, the poster went on sale with the promise that "every five posters sold, one is given out to someone free." Shirt often identifies those people chosen through his social media, shipping posters around the world. In May, the artist began to guerrilla install framed versions of the poster around NYC, starting in his hometown Queens.
